Dive into the Moneyverse:
Immersive Interaction and Playful Knowledge Transfer
The Berner Kaiserhaus is home to “Moneyverse,” an innovative center dedicated to the culture of finance. Thanks to a collaboration between the Bern Historical Museum and the SNB, the history of money is transformed into an immersive experience. At the heart of this technical installation is the supraGuide DIVA. The system uses precise trigger technology to convey knowledge in an intuitive way, without overlap. From a virtual paternoster to key interest rate simulators, the exhibition brings history to life using tonwelt’s high-tech solutions, setting new standards for modern museums.
A vibrant hub dedicated to financial culture and history, Moneyverse opened its doors in early April in the heart of Bern’s Old Town. Within the historic walls of the Kaiserhaus – founded in 1904 by merchant Wilhelm Kaiser as a department store – a collaboration between the Bern Historical Museum and the Swiss National Bank has given rise to a new meeting place. In a space where goods were once traded, the nature of money now takes center stage. Within this striking architectural setting, the supraGuide DIVA multimedia guide serves as central navigator, guiding visitors through the complex worlds of economics.
The Moneyverse exhibition seamlessly blends history and cutting-edge technology to offer a unique experience. The topic of money, often perceived as abstract and dry, is presented in a concrete, engaging, and multimedia-rich format. The supraGuide DIVA serves as the technical centerpiece: as soon as visitors approach the interactive stations, the content is triggered intuitively. To ensure a truly immersive experience, the trigger zones are defined with a high accuracy, within a very limited space. Thanks to tonwelt’s ultra-precise trigger technology, there is no overlap, even when the interactive stations are located close to one another.
A glimpse into a historic vault reveals the origins of paper money during the Ming Dynasty. On the upper floor, state-of-the-art holographic technology brings the building’s entrance hall to life. Here, visitors engage with the narrative by reflecting on their personal relationship with money, aided by a seamless audio guide system that delivers information directly to their ears. As one of the first enthusiastic visitors points out: “As soon as you approach an exhibit, the guide immediately provides the appropriate context. This makes Moneyverse a model of best practice in modern knowledge transfer.”
An expedition through the mechanisms of our society
“Money affects us all, but its inner workings often remain hidden. The Moneyverse makes these invisible forces visible and understandable.” That’s how this innovative exhibition concept is summed up. And indeed: much like a laboratory dedicated to contemporary issues, it explores the major themes. In the key interest rate simulator, visitors take the reins themselves and discover firsthand how monetary policy decisions influence the economy as a whole. It is a journey through the history of the financial world that simultaneously bridges the gap with the digital present. From the myths explained in the Paternoster simulator to the testimonials of Swiss citizens in the entrance hall, the exhibition serves as a hub for financial education and social debate.
Highest demands on audio interaction
The challenge at Moneyverse lies in the diversity of formats: from discreet audio guide content for historical exhibits to synchronized and complex gaming features and simulations. This is where the supraGuide DIVA truly shines. Visitors use the supraGuide DIVA’s wireless controls to launch content on external players. In the “Money and Me” section, two-way communication between the supraGuide DIVA and external servers has been established via radio and network connections. For gaming enthusiasts, a third-party app offers educational serious games.
Thanks to the ultra-precise trigger system, visitors can let themselves be carried along by the flow without having to intervene manually. This technically sophisticated approach operates completely silently and stably in the background, making Moneyverse a must-see destination – and not just for those interested in finance. It also offers a new source of inspiration for scenographers and exhibition designers in the field of immersive experiences.
The Kaiserhaus thus becomes the stage for a technological symbiosis that demonstrates how the museums of tomorrow will operate: they do not wait for people to take an interest. They actively captivate their audience’s attention and enable them to grasp the complexity of the modern world in a playful way. Here, history isn’t just told – it’s experienced in real time and brought to life through cutting-edge digital technology. The Moneyverse impressively demonstrates that financial history doesn’t have to be a dry subject, and sets new standards for interactive exhibition design.
